Hi, not sure if this is the right place to post this query. I have a meeting scheduled with my consultant to discuss Platelet Rich Plasma treatment and Stem Cell therapy. The idea being to inject these into the knee joints. Great strides seem to be being made with the treatment of OA, and in racehorses, and greyhounds(!) but does anyone know if this new treatment is being used in RA or if there are any trials going on? Im in remission at the moment following lots and lots of hard work on my diet and lifestyle and feel that the time is right to begin to heal the joints. Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

Hi Janey

Welcome to the forum!

I think a good place to start in your search for answers on this question would be the NRAS Helpline, telephone 0800 2987 650. They will be able to access the latest information on research through their team of medical advisors.

To my knowledge although stem cell research has come a long way in recent years and studies continue with regard to its useability in Rheumatoid patients there remains a long way to go before testing, if feasible, even begins. The state of play may be different for osteoarthritis. One of the important things to bear in mind is that Rheumatoid is not 'arthritis' per se, and is NOT a disease of the bones/joints. It is a systemic auto-immune disorder for which disease modyfying drugs are needed to bring it under control. Left to its own devices Rheumatoid can sometimes spread very quickly and cause irreparable damage both to joints and major organs.

I am pleased to hear that you have found lifestyle changes of benefit to you. In my experience it is generally accepted that dietary changes alone will not affect the outcomes of Rheumatoid disease however combined with a strict regime of suitable drug therapy significant benefits can be seen.

Congratulations on your remission; fingers crossed it lasts a good while for you ThumpUp

My son, Ian, completed the BUPA Great North Run on 15th September running for the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society (NRAS). You can read his story at http://www.justgiving.com/ianlukewilson

Hi Janey,
The last time that I had my knees aspirated back in November, my rheumy doc was so amazed at the amount of fluid on my right knee that he started to discuss this stem cell type of injection that is under research which he hopes in the future would make a huge difference to us all. He seemed very excited by it .He obviously thinks it will benefit ra as well as oa patients Please keep us informed as to your decision and the outcome if you decide to have it done please. Glad to hear that you are keeping fairly well, I try very hard to keep to a healthy diet and it does make me feel more possitive about myself and that in turn helps my ra I believe.
Thanks Zena x.
